Why "Capricorn"?

Picture
The first performance of The Capricorn Singers, 1984
In the Autumn of 1983, a very small handful of people led by Ray Buckley decided to kick over the traces of a conventional ladies choir and gather together a group of ladies who were prepared to meet, to practice, and perfect a different kind of music.  Indeed, a sound made up of music from Bach to Bacharach if possible, which would give to the public songs from the shows, songs from films, songs of well known groups... in fact to let the public be entertained by music which in most cases they would recognise.

In January 1984, having gathered eight members together, it was decided that as the sign of the Zodiac for January was Capricorn, and they were all star-stuck anyway, The Capricorn Singers would be a fitting title for the group!

The Capricorn Singers quickly attracted more members and enjoyed regular engagements in and around The Fylde including success on two occasions at the Fleetwood Music and Arts Festival in 1984 and 1985.

Music Recordings

_In the Autumn of 1985 it was decided that the time had come to try recording some of the choir's repertoire onto audio cassette.  This led to a regular sale of music at concerts and from individual members of the group.

The traditional of recordings from The Capricorn Singers continues today with the two latest CDs "Winter Wonderland (2011)" and "Flying Free (2007)", the fourth and fifth recordings from the choir.  Details of the CDs can be found on the CD page..

10th Anniversary

10th Anniversary Cake
_By the time The Capricorn Singers reached their tenth anniversary in 1994 we had performed in almost 100 concerts and guest spots.  The anniversary was celebrated with a get together at the Ashley Conservative Club in Thornton on the 23rd February 1994 for all past and present members.

The cake survived long enough for the photo to be taken.

2009 was a very special year for The Capricorn Singers as we celebrated our 25th anniversary with our Silver Jubilee Concert at the Thornton Little Theatre on 27th June.  It was also the year in which the ladies travelled down to London to take part in the Festival of Brass and Voices at The Royal Albert Hall.

Photos of the visit are on our Gallery page.

In 2014 we celebrated our 30th year with a very special Summer Anniversary concert at The Blackpool Sixth Form College, participation in the Huddersfield Mrs Sunderland 125th Anniversary Festival and the Lytham St Annes Festival of Performing Arts.

Ian Whalley joined The Capricorn Singers as accompanist towards the end of 2013.  A well-known and respected choir accompanist on the Fylde Coast, Ian brings with him a wealth of experience, and a very useful knowledge of latin!
