Christmas Jumpers in October - why not!?

As a lot of people know, our Musical DIrector Joe LOVES Christmas and would celebrate Christmas every day of the year if he had the chance.  So, during mid-October he set a challenge.  The ladies should wear their Christmas jumpers for the very last rehearsal of October.  There were many bah-humbugs but some of the ladies duly arrived in their festive attire.  What a jolly (and warm!) rehearsal it was!

We are Recruiting

Do you enjoy singing? Would you like a fun hobby and make lots of new friends? The Capricorn Singers are looking for new members, particularly Altos (lower female voices if you don't know what that is!).

You don't have to be a music reader to join us nor have been professionally trained.  Many of our ladies learn by singing along to and listening to the tracks provided.  Everyone is part of The Capricorn Singers due to the fact they can sing, and they demonstrate enthusiasm and dedication to learn music and perform concerts throughout the year.

Come and join us in our 30th Anniversary year!

If you fit the bill and would like to come along and see whether you like it, we rehearse in the School Room of Cleveleys Park Methodist Church every Wednesday evening at 7:30pm. You'll be made very welcome and we'll even provide a free drink and a biscuit!

Contact us if you would like more information or have any questions.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Welcome our new accompanist

We are thrilled to announce that Ian Whalley has taken up our vacant post of accompanist and joined us towards the end of 2013 for our participation in the Festival of Remembrance at Fleetwood and our Christmas Concert at Poulton Methodist Church.

Ian is originally from Darwen. He studied Latin and French at Cambridge, and did teacher training in Aberystwyth. Disillusioned after six years teaching in the UK, he taught Latin for three years at Kamuzu Academy in Malawi. During this time he obtained a diploma for piano performance. After another year in England when he worked as a security officer and played Father Christmas for a month in a toy shop, he went out to Kenya. He taught Latin and French for nine years in two preparatory schools in Nairobi, and also taught piano at the Kenya Conservatoire.

In 2000 Ian rather reluctantly returned to England. Since then, he has taught piano and played for several local choirs and for ballet exams.

Ian is a very accomplished accompanist and we are delighted to welcome him to The Capricorn Singers.

... the 21st Night of September?  Well, the ladies certainly do!  It was the night that they helped to raise over £10,000 for Hug in a Bag and at the same time performed with Linda Nolan (see left).

"You were amazing".  Thank you for all the lovely comments that we have received since our performance.  We were delighted and honoured to be asked to open such an event.

Maybe we could sing with Linda again soon...

The Capricorn Singers and The Press

Earlier this week The Capricorn Singers were again featured in the Blackpool Gazette following the appointment of Joe, our new Musical Director.  I say again because we have been featured before a few times; some of which we haven't got any evidence of (if you have a press cutting featuring us, please can you send us a copy?).

This recent article provided a perfect opportunity to update the Press Cuttings gallery of our website.  Did you know we've featured in Lancashire Life magazine twice?  Once in 2000 and again for our 25th anniversary in 2009.  The earliest cutting we have is from 1984, our first year, when we won third place in the ladies choirs' class at the Fleetwood Music Festival.  Maybe we should consider getting involved again?

For that little bit of nostalgia, take a look at at our Press Cuttings archive.

New Musical Director For The Capricorn Singers

4/5/2013

We are thrilled to announce the appointment of our new Musical Director, Joe Martin.  Joe’s love for choral singing was born when he started studying at the University of Central Lancashire.  He successfully auditioned to join the UCLan Chamber Choir under the direction of Mark Goggins.  During his time in the choir, Joe sung in prestigious venues across the UK.  He was also part of the choir when they were crowned BBC Adult Choir of the Year 2010.

Having successfully set up and run a number of choirs, Joe Martin is highly regarded as someone who can inspire people of all ages and experience in the enjoyment of singing.  He is experienced in working with large groups and small ensembles and is also Musical Director of Preston Community Choir.

“A truly inspirational, energetic leader of singing” – Lancashire Music Service

Joe is very much looking forward to taking over the baton from David and carrying on the great work that The Capricorn Singers have achieved.  With a great work ethic, a fast pace and a smile, we can conquer the world!!
