Welcome our new accompanist

8/1/2014

We are thrilled to announce that Ian Whalley has taken up our vacant post of accompanist and joined us towards the end of 2013 for our participation in the Festival of Remembrance at Fleetwood and our Christmas Concert at Poulton Methodist Church.

Ian is originally from Darwen. He studied Latin and French at Cambridge, and did teacher training in Aberystwyth. Disillusioned after six years teaching in the UK, he taught Latin for three years at Kamuzu Academy in Malawi. During this time he obtained a diploma for piano performance. After another year in England when he worked as a security officer and played Father Christmas for a month in a toy shop, he went out to Kenya. He taught Latin and French for nine years in two preparatory schools in Nairobi, and also taught piano at the Kenya Conservatoire.

In 2000 Ian rather reluctantly returned to England. Since then, he has taught piano and played for several local choirs and for ballet exams.

Ian is a very accomplished accompanist and we are delighted to welcome him to The Capricorn Singers.

We are Recruiting

We are now recruiting!

Would you like to join The Capricorn Singers or know someone who may?

You do not have to read music or have been professionally trained. You just need to be able to hold a tune and show dedication and enthusiasm for producing a great performance.

We're particularly looking for Second Sopranos. If you do not know what type of voice you have, don't worry, our Musical Director will place you in the right section.

If you are interested either email us for more information or come along on a Thursday night. Rehearsal details are on the Rehearsal page of this website.  Our first meeting after the Summer break is on the 6th September.

When you come along you will be allocated a "buddy" who will show you the music we use and explain all about what we do in more detail.  Don't worry, you are not left to fend for yourself!  The first few times you attend you are invited to either just listen or join in, the choice is yours.  You'll also get to know the ladies over a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit.  There are no membership fees to pay until you have become a member following a simple one-to-one voice test with the Musical Director held on your 4th week of attendance.

Being part of The Capricorn Singers is a rewarding and hugely enjoyable experience and a great way of meeting other local people who like to sing.

We look forward to meeting you at an upcoming rehearsal.

In an attempt to make the web presence and downloading experience easier for members.

A new members area has added to our site which will include various administration and membership documents.  In addition the members area will be the new home for the Sheet Music and Rehearsal Track download files.

As a result of the additional pages and menu item increase, the theme of the site has had to change also.

The members area is password protected and is available to members only.  The password will change regularly in an attempt to maintain site security.

More information will be available at rehearsal.

Action for Change!

18/2/2009

A recent survey asked the choir members to sit down together and come up with actions and suggestions for improvement.  The main focus is on:
a) Choir Management and Development,
b) Performance and Presentation,
c) Publicity

The results are being drawn up and make interesting reading.

As ever with surveys which gather great suggestions, they need to be agreed and implemented within a timescale.

So, who's up for some actions for change?

Subscription Increase!

27/1/2009

At the recent AGM, it was proposed, seconded and agreed to increase the weekly subscription from £1 to £2.
It does sound a lot in percentage terms, however as it has been at £1 for almost 10 years, it is probably long over due!
And as someone kindly pointed out, "what else can you get these days for just £2 a night; we learn music, have a good old sing along, a cup of tea and we have fun aswell".
